CartoonChurch: Down again

with 2 comments

The site has down again today as you’ll have seen. I’m still getting no response or information from my web hosts so I’ve begun the process of moving the site to a new web host. I’m attempting to move the domain name as well, as the ‘DNS’, which is (if I understand things correctly) the domain name bit is experiencing severe problems too.

[Technical talk]It’s all a bit worrying as I have no ftp access to the old server, so I’m having to do things without a complete backup. This could be a big mistake, but it appears I have no option (apart from doing nothing, which is unacceptable when people have paid me money to use the site). I have a recent backup of the Cartoon Blog WordPress database, but I have no idea what to do with it. When I have some time I will spend a few days looking into it. Unfortunately these things do usually take me a few days (literally).

Continued apologies. Do contact me at the address given via the sidebar link if you need cartoons, advice etc.

  1. I must say I am astonished to find that WordPress does not offer a proper user interface to restore a backup, only the instructions here which are clearly designed for geeks.

But what you may be able to do if you can get into the old site at all is to do an export. Go into the control panel of the old site and go to “Manage” then “Export”, and save the WXR file. Then set up a new WordPress blog at your new site, then at its control panel go to “Manage” then “Import”, then “WordPress”, browse for your WXR backup file and upload. The worrying thing may be the 2MB size limit, I’m not sure what you can do if the WXR file is larger than that as mine is.

  2. Dave, we had to do the same a while back. In the end we used a plugin to access the php database. It is possible, just tricky. Let me know if I can help – I can probably unravel what we did.
